Biography

Terry taught in secondary schools for 36 years, in Luton, Surrey and East Sussex before moving to Suffolk. Originally appointed as head of science at Deben High School in Felixstowe, he worked through the ranks and was eventually promoted to headteacher. He retired from that post in August 2008 and now works as an independent consultant, as a School Improvement Partner and as a Trust Schools consultant for the SSAT.

From October 2008 until July 2009 he was the Project Lead for the Home Access Pilot scheme operating in Suffolk – focused on promoting the scheme with schools, parents and pupils; liaising with other LA colleagues and BECTA. The pilot was a tremendous success both in Suffolk and in Oldham, with over 12,500 grants awarded.

This was significantly above the target and was delivered ahead of schedule, a testament to the value of the scheme both to the target audience and the wider community that was supporting them. Since the end of the pilot Terry has supported BECTA in promoting the roll-out of the National scheme.

He is committed as chair to enable the partners to work well together to ensure the effective development and implementation of the Sunderland Strategy and Local Area Agreement. He writes a weekly column in the Sunderland Echo called ‘Proud to be in Sunderland’.
